Productive use of energy
This paper addresses the need for reliable energy access for businesses to enable the productive use of clean energies. In addition, the paper presents case studies from nine African countries to show promising ways to successfully engage in rural developing areas for entrepreneurs, NGOs, investors and policymakers. ARE believes that these examples can also be used as showcase examples in other parts of the developing world.

While the interest of policy makers in the nexus between electrification, productive electricity usage and development impacts has been increasing steadily over the last decade, the lack of robust evidence on causal effects of electrification is striking. The workshop in Dar es Salaam targeted policy-makers, energy providers, energy practitioners, local entrepreneurs, and other key actors in the PUE ecosystem. Participants discussed and learned from each other’s work on how to successfully advance productive uses of energy in rural areas
